Guiob Church Ruins: A striking memorabilia of the past

“Ruins are the cathedrals of Time.” says book author Marty Rubin. What we have known today as archeological ruins have once upon a time been a part of the world that is not known in today’s modern times. They tell us innumerable stories that are underneath time’s mystical representation of society.

Guiob Church Ruins

Source: thepoortraveler.com

In the beautiful island-province of Camiguin, there lies a ruin which has been left by its generation yet was preserved for the appreciation of those who want to marvel at the unique and breathtaking story of its history, the ruins of Guiob Church.

It is located at Barangay Bonbon, Catarman, Camiguin and has been standing there since the 16th-century Spanish colonial era. The old name of the town at which the original Guiob church once stood was then called Cotta Bato and served as the capital of Camiguin at that time. It was only on May 13, 1871, that the houses in the town, together with the large of the church, were destroyed by an enormous volcanic explosion brought by Mt. Vulcan.

Today, what remains are the sturdy walls and columns of the church that has become one of the most popular tourist spots in Camiguin. It is now considered one of the most treasured ruins on the island because of its architecture made out of coral stones.

How to get there?

In Cagayan de Oro City at Agora Terminal, you could take either take a ride bus, for about P150 approximately, or van going to the municipality of Balingoan Bus Terminal in Misamis Oriental and arrive there in about two and a half to three hours.

Guiob Church Ruins

Source: phtourguide.com

From Balingoan Bus Terminal, you can just walk to arrive at Balingoan Port where a  ferry bound to Benoni Port in Camiguin is available for boarding for only P130 to P170. You can arrive at the port in one and a half to two hours travel time.

At Benoni Port, vans, jeeps, and multi-cabs can be seen around the area and can be taken for a ride towards the town proper of Mambajao for at least P30 and about one hour of travel.

You can now continue taking a ride to arrive at the ruins for about 30 minutes from the center of Mambajao town and see its magnificent view.

While at the ruins…

As a historical site, the ruins of Guiob Church is undeniably a suitable spot for taking selfies and groufies if you are traveling with friends and your family. There are trees around the place so there is an opportunity to have a picnic or a short and even long strolls and runs through the standing posts and ruins of the church.

Source: phtourguide.com

A newer chapel was built within the walled ruins where locals are usually seen to do their prayers. Thus, aside from the refreshing and solemn view of the site, it also offers an outlet to pray and reconnect yourself to the Almighty.

The ruins of Guiob Church is indeed a representation to how Filipinos strove hard in going through the drawbacks of being at a moment in time where a superior foreign power ruled over their native land. Yet, looking back at our past is also a one way of accepting who we are as a nation and as a country.

As the only recognized Christian nation in Asia, Philippines is a country where a lot of religious sites and sceneries can be visited for free public viewing and indulgence.

In the municipality of Laguindingan in Misamis Oriental, there is one religious site called Birhen sa Moog Chapel where tourists and localities alike can engage in a sincere moment with the Divine and at the same time taking the time to relax and chill in the beach water.

source: Birhen sa Moog Official Facebook Page

According to local Catholic devotees, the church came to existence from a very old legend at the time of Spanish colonization.  Around 1600, there was an old woman who was sick and thirsty asking for water from a fisherman. Expressing great concern to the condition of the old lady, the fisherman then hurriedly went back to his house to get some water. When he got back to the woman, he saw the old woman seated on a big rock and carrying a baby in her arms. To his surprise, the old lady suddenly disappeared from eye sight together with the baby in her arms.

From that day on, the locals considered the incident as a miracle made by the Virgin Mary and later call the area “Birhen Sa Moog”. To remember the event, they built a chapel above the stone where they believed the Virgin Mary, disguised as the sick old woman, took a seat on.

The devotees of Birhen Sa Moog otherwise known as “Berhen delos Remedios” believes that the small flowing spring below the big rock is miraculous and can heal a number of illnesses.

This is one of the oldest church in Misamis Oriental that is located in Barangay Moog Laguindingan.

Being the third oldest church in Misamis Oriental, the area has been developed and slowly gaining public attention especially around Misamis Oriental. To date, several cottages can be found around the place which can be rented from P100 to P500. You can also bring foods as much as you can as there are no corkages to be paid upon entering the area.

The chapel was built at the seaside so it is also allowed for visitors to take to the sea and plunged in the beach water surrounding the chapel. While at the sea, you can also try their bamboo rafting for only 10 to 20 pesos.

How to get there…

The Divine Beauty of Birhen sa Moog

It is easier if you own a car when traveling to Berhen delos Remedios, but if you don’t, it is always an option to commute. From Cagayan de Oro City, you can take a ride by jeep going to Alubijid or Initao for only 25- 30 pesos within 40 minutes travel time. Inform the driver to drop you off at Alubijid Public Market and from there, look for a habal-habal to get you to Birhen sa Moog or “Moog” as the locals usually refer to it.

If your starting point is at Laguindingan Airport, you can ride a habal-habal for P50-P100 per head.

It is easier nowadays to promote beautiful places in our country that are still unknown to many. By doing this, we are not only introducing the beauty of our country to the whole world but more importantly, our rich and unique culture which defines us as a nation. By promoting the magnificence of  Birhen sa Moog, we are not only earning respect and recognition but also, it gives us pride that we are able to give importance of the treasures passed on by our ancestors.

Now, if you are going to visit the place for a trekking adventure, we have few reminders and tips for you to enjoy your trip while avoiding minor accidents and it goes with a good title for you to identify:

  1. The Early Bird (Start your trekking adventure early)

As what they say, the earlier the better. If you are planning to have an adventure, plan it a little bit earlier. Get an earlier flight to your destination and start your trekking early in the morning when the weather is still friendly enough for the activity you are planning to do and more importantly so that you can avoid having sunburns. Even though you are getting inside a mountain (or perhaps a forest) but remember, there are parts of the area where trees are invisible.

  1. The Cindy-Chose (Choose and wear the right footwear for your trekking activity)

Since trekking is a combination of hiking and walking, you need to choose an appropriate footwear with a good quality. Aside from wearing appropriate shoes for hiking, you also need to wear something to protect your ankles so that you can avoid having ankle cuffs. When you purchase your boots, shoes, or any protective gear, you also need to remember that it fits your size so that it will not make you uncomfortable and irritable.

  1. Sacky-Socks (Bring your socks)

If you already got the appropriate shoes, you also need to get the best type of socks to wear in your journey to the mountain. Your perfect boots plus your wrong shocks can perhaps make up to your tiresome undertaking. Better yet, look for socks with sweat wicking characteristics or are also waterproof.

  1.  Power Leg (Build leg strength by working out)

When you do trekking, a leg strong enough for a physical is one of the most important things to have to be able to survive the whole duration of the journey. You can add strength to your leg by working out in the gym, jogging or just working out at home like leg pressing and squats.

  1. Walk like a soldier, not a princess (Develop a suitable walking technique)

Another thing to have to make your trekking adventure memorable and less strenuous is to have a walking technique that will help to have the stamina for traveling long distances and natural obstacles that you may encounter. You can start your practice by walking on an uphill land formation so that your body will get to familiarize what it will be encountering in Mt. Lumot.  You can plan activities like walking on elevated places with all the outfit and heavy backpack to prepare yourself for the big day.

  1. Dora Backy (Bring what are only necessary for your trip)

When going around for a trip, bring what is only necessary such as food, water, personal hygiene, cold and warm wears, clothes, medicines, flashlight, and map among others. It is much better if you do a check list in order to remember all the things before and after. Another thing, look for backpack models with adjustable chest and waist straps so that you can position or adjust it right to your body, and with external compression straps so that the load doesn’t shift.

  1.  Grandpas Stick (Using walking poles in trekking)

Throughout your trekking activity, it is inevitable to feel exhaustion, muscle cramps, backache along the way. That is why walking poles are also one of the most important things to bring with you. Bringing a pole will help you move with ease on your knees, thighs, and back on steep climbs. A pole can also be used to help clear grasses and small plants along your way. You can try one or two poles whichever suits you.

  1. Water and food are Life (Drink water and eat food frequently while walking)

Whether you are located in an area with a warm climate or not, you must regularly drink water. More so while you are in a trekking activity. From time to time, it is important for you to have a refreshing drink of water to avoid dehydration. Losses on breath and sweating will reduce your blood volume that results to your heart pumping harder.  That is why every time you feel thirsty drink even a small quantity of liquid.

In order to hydrate your body, you also have to eat the right amount of food along the way since it will provide the increasing energy requirements of your body while moving from one point to another point on the mountain. Eat small amounts of food whenever you feel like eating or you are hungry to maintain your energy. It is recommended to bring fruits for an easy pick since it doesn’t need many preparations and can give you the energy you needed, or simply, to have something to keep yourself occupied while walking.

Higalas, these 8 tips can help you enjoy your trekking adventure without the hassle bustle of unexpected things that may happen in your trip. Adventures are everywhere, it’s a matter of making the best out of it and being able to go home uninjured, alive and kicking.

Relive Your Meteor Garden Moments As Taiwan Approves Visa Free Status For Filipinos

In 2003, we can’t help falling in love with the story of a poor teenage girl named Shancai meeting four rich and handsome but arrogant students Dao Ming Si, Hua Ze Lei, Mei Zou and Xi Men forming a group known as Flower 4 or F4.

It should be remembered that the series became the highest rated TV series here in the Philippines which eventually paved way to today’s huge demand of both Taiwanese and Korean dramas here in the Philippines. And no matter how old the Taiwanese drama gets, it would always have a special place in the hearts of the Filipinos.

It is just so nice to relive those moments especially now that traveling to Taiwan without paying visa fees has just been approved by the Taiwanese government giving the privilege for Philippine nationals.

It was June this year when the government of Taiwan announced the visa-free status for the Philippines. However, the implementation was postponed until this September when Taiwan Premier Lai Ching-te has officially approved the plan to give visa-free status to Filipinos. Taiwan’s Ministry Foreign Affairs (MOFA) is yet to disclose the details but new measures are expected to be implemented on October said a report by state-owned Central News Agency.

Source: cna.com

The free visa ruling is part of Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy which aims to relax visa rules for the 10 member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with a goal to improving ties within Southeast Asia, South Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Imagine all those time and effort we have pour just to watch Meteor Garden on time. Remember those posters, magazines, and CDs you have collected? Those times when you tried to learn to sing their official soundtrack in Chinese? And how artsy you can get to your Meteor Garden scrapbook? It would have been a very memorable moment to finally visit National Chung Cheng University (aka Ying De University), Ying De Cafeteria, and the PS Bu Bu Restaurant in Taipei City, all of which have become famous spots because of the all time favorite Taiwanese drama.

Freshen Up Your Mind and Soul at Tinuy-an Falls

Source: outragemag.com

There are a lot of reasons why you have to visit the province of Surigao del Sur. It is a place where natural resources is also a contributing factor to the overall progress of its economy. More so, it is endowed with so many tourist destinations where tourists from all over the country and from different parts of the world seek a unique kind of adventure and thrill.

Freshen Up Your Mind and Soul at Tinuy-an Falls

Source: travelingmorion.com

One of the famed tourist destinations of the province is the Tinuy-an Falls in Bislig City that is frequently touted as the “Niagara Falls of the Philippines” because of its breathtaking 95-meter width and 55-meter plunge from its three-tiered waterfall formation invitingly comparable in appearance to the world famous Niagara Falls of the United States of America.

The term “Tinuy-an” dates back before the Spanish colonization era in the country. It was said that the people of Magdiwata Mountains were enslaved by a group of tribesmen from Agusan. In their quest for freedom, the Magdiwata people plotted an escape by riding small boats called “baroto” to cross the falls and to lead their conquerors to their demise. The mountain people’s act to lure the tribesmen into their fall birthed the name “Tinuy-an”, a Visayan term for intentionally doing something to achieve a certain goal.

How to get there?

If your starting point is Cagayan de Oro City, the nearest stop before going to Bislig City is via Butuan City. From CdeO, there are many bus companies around the city proper where you can take a ride bound to Butuan City for about 3 and a half hours. You can also rent a taxi but it would more or less cost you too much.

After arriving in Butuan City, you could take a bus ride bound to Bislig City for around P250 within 5-6 hours of travel time. If riding by bus, does not suit you, vans are also available for public transportation with around P200 fare and roughly 5 hours of time travel.

From Bislig City proper, you can rent a “habal-habal” (single motor vehicle) for 200-300 pesos towards Tinuy-an Falls depending on your deal with the driver.

While at Tinuy-an Falls…

Before jumping in the waters and gorging on the magnificent scene of falls, do not forget to pay the P50-peso entrance fee (for adults and no charges for small children).

There are some stores and cottages around the area for those who plan to have a nice spot for delicious meals and for those who just want to have a short break or a chitchat with the group. You could also see a few tables but visitors must follow a “first-come-first-serve” rule to be able to use the table.

Source: Tinuy-an Falls Facebook Page

Marveling at the beauty of Tinuy-an Falls will make you forget the long hours you spent  travelling as well as all the worries you left at home. You can also ride a bamboo raft if you wish to have a closer look at the falls or you just want to take selfies or groufies with your friends at the middle of the natural pool or while allowing the raft to flow you somewhere along the stretch of the water.

For a more adventurous experience, you can hike to the top of the falls to see where the running trailing waters on the tiers of the falls end at the bottom below. However, it is not advisable for anyone to have a jumping dive from the upper part of the falls to its basin because of the dangers that come with it.
